Care continues
between shifts.
A task board for foster homes and shelter volunteers. Name the animal, assign the work, and leave a visible handoff for the next person.
Care board
Activity in this browser
A local activity list can be edited by anyone with device access. It is not an immutable audit trail or proof that care was delivered.
From a board to a shift note.
Export a plain-text snapshot for volunteers who do not use the app. Review it before sharing; it will not update automatically.
Omitting owner fields does not anonymize names written inside task or animal descriptions.
Help test the handoff hypothesis.
This prototype assumes that visible ownership and a readable note could make shift changes clearer. No volunteer interviews or shelter pilot have been conducted yet.
- Can a new volunteer identify the next unclaimed task without explanation?
- Does the shift note contain enough context, or too much detail?
- Would a shared-device workflow fit the organization, or is synchronized access essential?
Proposed next step: consented coordinator interviews, then a small usability session using fictional animals. Measure task-finding time and missing handoff context; do not claim improved care before evaluation.
Designed around the handoff.
Claim → complete → reopen. Tasks need an owner before completion. Unfinished tasks past their due time remain visible. Finished work can be reopened with a new activity entry.
Portable and explicit. JSON handoff exports contain the board and activity. Imports replace the local board after confirmation. Keep a backup before sharing. No server receives the file.
Prior work and limits. Adapted from Amrit Lahari's SlothDO. The animal-care board was built previously for AnimalHack. New Practice to Create work is the readable shift-note export, completed-task and owner-field controls, report preview, report tests, feedback plan and narrated presentation. OpenAI Codex assisted with code, tests and documentation.
